Our Story

How It All Began

The Old Ute Trading Post has stood in Carl’s hometown of Vernal, Utah, since nearly the turn of the century. In those days, things in that sleepy western town hadn’t changed too much. Carl visited the ancient store regularly as a child, admiring the Native American and Wild West items. He had a deep connection with the history of the early Americans. In 1989, the owners of the Trading Post decided to retire and Carl jumped at the chance to purchase the business. He remodeled and took over the store changing the name to Ashley Trading Post. He had realized a childhood dream.

Soon the store expanded to include a new location, Cowboys and Indians, in Steamboat Springs, Colorado, another small rugged town. In 1995, Carl chose St. George, Utah for his third location. He appreciated the beautiful, open area seeing the crossroads of Native Americans and the Old West.

Cowboys and Indians is a family owned business where Carl remains involved in every aspect. His continued fascination with the long ago era of cowboys and Indians is apparent in the products he chooses for his stores.

Besides the three “western outposts” in Vernal, Steamboat Springs, and St. George, we are excited to introduce our online store where you can purchase many of the same authentic and period products. Take a close look at the jewelry category packed full of exquisite handmade Native American sterling silver jewelry, inlaid with semi-precious stones. Bring the Old West home with statues and collectibles. Check back often as new products are being added regularly.
